Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals No. 2 and 1 were raised over 27 areas across the country on Monday afternoon as Tropical Storm Ursula slightly intensified ahead of its expected landfall over Eastern Visayas on Christmas eve, according to PAGASA.

In its 5 p.m. bulletin, the state weather bureau raised Signal No. 2 over Eastern Samar.

Meanwhile, Signal No.1 was hoisted over the following areas:

  • Southern portion of Quezon (Buenavista, Calauag, Catanauan, General Luna, Guinayangan, Lopez, Macalelon, Mulanay, San Andres, San Francisco, San Narciso, Tagkawayan)
  •     Camarines Sur
  •     Camarines Norte
  •     Catanduanes
  •     Albay
  •     Marinduque
  •     Romblon
  •     Sorsogon
  •     Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands Rest of Eastern Samar
  •     Northern Samar
  •     The rest of Eastern Samar
  •     Biliran
  •     Leyte
  •     Southern Leyte
  •     Northern Cebu (Carmen, Asturias, Tuburan, Catmon, Sogod, Borbon, Tabuelan, Tabogon, San Remigio, Bogo, Medellin, Daanbantayan, Bantayan Islands, Camotes Islands)

PAGASA said Ursula may gradually intensify into a Severe Tropical Storm prior to its landfall on Tuesday afternoon or evening.

Compared to a tropical storm that has a maximum wind speed of 62 to 88 kph, a severe tropical storm packs winds of 89 to 117 kph.

As of 4 p.m., the eye of the cyclone was located 670 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte carrying maximum sustained winds of up to 75 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

Ursula continues to move west northwest at 30 kph.

By Tuesday afternoon (Christmas eve), the cyclone is forecast to be 75 kilometers east northeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

By Wednesday afternoon (Christmas day), Ursula will be 20 kilometers southwest of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

The cyclone is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday afternoon.

Between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, moderate to heavy rains will prevail over Dinagat Islands, Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands, Eastern Visayas, Romblon, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, and the northern portions of Cebu and Negros Occidental, while light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains will persist over Bicol Region, Quezon, Marinduque and the rest of Visayas and Surigao del Norte.

Between Wednesday morning and late evening, PAGASA forecast moderate to heavy rains over Mindoro Provinces, Marinduque, Romblon, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and northern portion of Palawan inlcuding Cuyo and Calamian Islands, and light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over CALABARZON.

The state weather bureau advised residents of these areas to prepare for possible flooding and rain-induced landslides.

PAGASA also warned against sea travel, especially for small seacrafts, as moderate to rough sea conditions will prevail over the eastern seaboards of the country on Monday. —LDF, GMA News
